New Year, New Blog…

When I started this blog, I was a blogging newbie.  Now that I am an “experienced blogger”, I am going to have a footer around and see if I can’t make it easier.

So, from now on, read www.getoffthestreet.wordpress.com for news about our work and life.

And feel free to let me know what you think!

Words can’t say it…

15th January 2010

Went to a shoe shoptoday and collected some boxes for packing.  Got home and did not know where to start, so danced with the children instead.  I think I am picking up a bit of the old African rhythm.  Both my children have it so I am thinking it might be genetic.

Costumes are by Palesa curtesy of the dress up box – I would NEVER dress my girls like this and under no circumstances are they allowed to leave the house wearing these clothes (much to their disappointment!).

Gutted!  A mere three months after we moved in, the owner of the house told me today that she is selling it and moving to Margate.  Here we go again!  Perhaps God is telling us something.  Oh well – off to find some boxes.  With two children, there is no way I can travel light!  Volunteers to help greatly welcomed.

Almost all babies, children or young people…

Nothing I can say really.

Homeless?

10th January 2010                   Every picture tells a story.

Yesterday, I went to Bloemfontein.  On the way, we pass Botshabelo, the second largest township in South Africa, after Soweto.  There, I took this picture.  When I look closely at it, I start to wonder who the people are.  The way they are dressed and the way they are walking builds stories in my head.  Where are they going?  Where have they been?  I wish I understood a little more about things here.  The longer I am here, the more questions I have.

Palesa has made a new friend, who is also called Palesa.  Here they are watching Hairspray, which Palesa got from Santa.

.  It is a great film to give to African kids, who pick up the moves and rhythm really quickly and start grooving along in perfect time – even Rorisang!  The children are more entertaining to watch than the DVD…

You know you are in Africa when –

  • You have to wait behind someone who has stopped in the slip road to turn right off a busy dual carriageway to talk on the phone (yes, the sliproad to turn right!)
  •

  • You see someone in town wearing their pyjamas
  • You find yourself saying to yourself, “Mmm.  I like the bag on that person’s head.”
  • You see this on the road and think, “Mmmm, good packing.  Must try and fit mine all in like that the next time I go on holiday”

ARGH!!!!!

Africa is fab…

5th January 2010   Happy New Year

We arrived back from our trip to South Africa yesterday afternoon.  We had a fantastic time and it was lovely to see my brother and his wife and cousin Matthew.  Bruce insisted on being in the blog, so this one is for you my boy!  It is definitely the best of the bunch!

We spent a few nights in Komatipoort on the edge of the Kruger National Park, and a few nights in St Lucia on the east coast of the country.  I return refreshed and full of resolutions, if somewhat sad to see Bruce and Kerry go after so short a visit.

Rorisang enjoyed her first Christmas and got some toys of her very own.  She has now learned a new word – MINE!

Tomorrow I am going to visit a school in the Free State to see if it is suitable for Palesa.  I am not overly impressed with the school that she is in, and it costs a fortune.  Please pray that I do not make a mistake with this decision, but I strongly feel that the cost of the school she is in does not reflect the standard.

I am meeting with Samuel on Thursday to see how the unit has been going in my absence.  I am hoping for some clarity in the direction I should now take.  Again, prayers would be welcome!

Thanks for all your Christmas wishes.

Even More Family Life

Was having a problem with More Family Life Page so will start another.  Read here to see what we are up to and what is going on here in Lesotho.

Don’t forget to also have a look at the Work of the Bana Trust tab for information on what we are doing with the boys and how that is developing.

16th December

Internet connection in South Africa currently unavailable so we only have access when in Lesotho.  We are leaving this weekend for a break for a couple of weeks, and I am not taking the computer.  For all potential burglars who are reading this, I am leaving it safely stored in a secure box at a friend’s house who is having big strong visitors staying with him over the holidays.  He too is taking a break from his work of body building and mud wrestling.

This will probably be my last entry of 2009, so warmest wishes for a wonderful Christmas and New Year from Lesotho.

Love

Robyn, Palesa and Rorisang

11th December

Does anyone else ever feel that, no matter how hard they try, they are rubbish as a mother?  And that their children deserve better?  I am having one of those days….  Please pray for us.

6th December 2009

Today my oldest friends in Lesotho, the Jens, left to return home to Australia.  Brad and Nicole arrived in 2006 at the same time as me with their son Marcus and we all started teaching at the Prep School together.  They have since adopted two children from MIS but sadly have decided that they must now return home.  They were given a leave of absence from their work and this is the latest that they can return home if they want to keep their jobs.
